About our teams
Product Integration Team:
As part of the Product Integration team, you will focus on system architecture, including power electronics, with a strong emphasis on adapting our existing products to meet the specific needs of our customers. You support our technical sales team and play a key role in developing new concepts and solutions.
This team manage several short-term projects simultaneously, which requires a strong ability to multitask and maintain close and effective communication with customers. Collaboration is an important part of the position, as you will work closely with international partners, component suppliers, and customers. You will be responsible for commissioning, troubleshooting, and field testing, with occasional travel required. Experience within the aviation industry is highly beneficial, as many of our projects are within this sector.
Electrical Design Team:
In contrast, the Electrical Design team focuses on long-term projects centered around the development of our fuel cell systems. The work is more structured, with a strong emphasis on meeting industry standards through detailed product specifications, implementation, verification, and testing.
The team plays a crucial role in the certification process, contributing throughout the entire lifecycle. We also collaborate closely with the production team to ensure a smooth transition to manufacturing. As such, the Electrical Design team bridges product development and production, ensuring that our products are safe, robust, certified, and ready for the market on time.
In this role, you will have the opportunity to engage in a variety of tasks, from developing technical documentation and certification plans to conducting detailed electrical simulations and hands-on work during testing phases. You will be involved in cross-functional meetings, participate in design reviews, and provide technical feedback for continuous improvements. No two weeks will be the same.

About the Role
You will focus on the design, testing, and documentation of electrical subsystems. Your daily tasks will range from drafting technical specifications for future components and products to troubleshooting and refining existing designs. Key Responsibilities

Qualifications
M.Sc./B.Sc. in a relevant engineering field (e.g., Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics or Mechatronics).
Hands on experience of working with electronics.

Fluent Swedish and/or English spoken and written.
Strong computer skills.

Preferred Skills
Experience with CAD tools, preferably ARCADIA.
Knowledge of electrical systems in the voltage range of 60-1500 V DC.

At PowerCell, we develop both fuel cell stacks and systems for various applications. The continuous improvement of efficiency, performance and durability is very important. The core of a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell is the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) where two of the main components are the anode and cathode electrodes. The electrodes, prepared in a thin film coating process, consist of catalysts and additives. The selection of catalysts as well as the consistent high quality of the electrodes are of particular importance in further improving the performance and durability of the MEA.
We are therefore looking for an Internship Student to support us in our process of fuel cell catalyst evaluation and electrode development. The work will be carried out at our development laboratory in Gothenburg. Starting date preferably August.
Possible topics:
Evaluation of Pt/C catalysts by electrochemical testing with the rotating disk electrode (RDE)
Optimization of the RDE thin film coating quality
Preparation of catalyst inks using typical ink preparation procedures

Topic: Peroxide formation for PEM fuel cell catalysts

Background: The peroxide formation during PEM fuel cell operation causes a chemical stress for the polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) and is a challenge for the durability and lifetime of the PEM fuel cell membrane electrode assembly (MEA). The main source for the peroxide formation is the cathode catalyst layer and the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) pathways.

Work description: The experimental part of the work includes development of an electrochemical test procedure using a rotating ring-disk electrode (RRDE), and measurements of peroxide for different PEM fuel cell cathode catalysts. Paper research around peroxide formation for PEM fuel cell cathode catalysts will provide a baseline for discussion around the experimentally obtained results.

Project description

PowerCell develops both fuel cell stacks and systems for various applications, where the continuous improvement of performance, efficiency and durability is crucial. The Membrane-Electrode-Assembly (MEA) is a core component of the Proton-Exchange-Membrane (PEM) fuel cell and contains - next to other subcomponents - a Catalyst-Coated-Membrane (CCM), made up of two electrodes (anode and cathode) and the electrolytic membrane. The durability of PEM fuel cells still is a challenge for its successful introduction into a mass market and during the last decades, extensive R&D around the durability of involved components like e.g. the catalyst or the membrane was conducted. In opposite to this, the contribution of the electrode structure (i.e., its morphology) to the performance losses over time was less good investigated and is thus poorly understood. Additionally, for certain applications an intermediate PEM operating temperature (100-120° C) is required, which adds new challenges regarding MEA performance and lifetime.

Today, various electrode and MEA manufacturing methods are used for the preparation of fuel cell MEAs: At a laboratory-scale stage, methods like spray coating or the well-established doctor blade coating are used for fast prototyping while at a high-throughput state, methods like slot die coating or micro gravure coating are state-of-the-art. Depending on the employed coating technique, the coated catalyst ink is subjected to a certain shear force characteristic, which triggers a rheological response of the ink and ultimately leads to influences on the structure of the resulting electrode. The effect of the different coating methods and physical parameter matrix to the initial performance are not well described today. Assessing the effect of the preparation method on the lifetime behaviour of the MEA is crucial and even more important at intermediate temperatures. This challenge requires an increased attention in both research and development.

Key tasks of this work shall be:

- Identification of raw materials and semi-finished products key characteristics for an improved durability along the MEA development and production path.

- Investigation of measures for a better control of electrode structural properties with specific attention towards the ionomer type and distribution in the electrodes and the GDL - electrode interaction.

- Description of the effect of different electrode preparation processes to the resulting structural properties and the depending in-Situ behaviour.

- Characterization of the shear force impact of the preparation method and the interaction of the ink components with each other by rheology.

- Support the work with the development of a computational model, which should allow to assess the interaction between the designed structural properties and the operation condition over the lifetime of a fuel cell stack.

- Description of design parameters for electrodes with improved lifetime and durability.

- Description of an improved CCM structure optimized for intermediate-temperature application.

PowerCell develops both fuel cell stacks and systems for various applications, where the continuous improvement of efficiency, performance and durability is crucial. The proton exchange membrane (PEM) and the ionomer integrated in catalyst layers, with the function of transporting protons from the anode catalyst to the cathode catalyst, have a high impact on the overall performance and durability of the fuel cell. Thus, the understanding of the membrane´s chemical and mechanical properties become necessary. For the purpose, an efficient support of our engineering process from early development phase until implementation and integration in customer use-cases, Powercell is about to develop fundamental and predictive PEM characterization tools, without the need for extensive in Situ experiments. As a “Development Engineer - 0D/1D CFD Engineer” you will work mainly within our project organization and report to both your line manager and respective project managers. At PowerCell, we develop both fuel cell stacks and systems for various applications. The continuous improvement of efficiency, performance and durability is very important. There the fuel cell catalysts play an important role. For an efficient support to our engineering process from early development phase until implementation and integration in customer use-cases, PowerCell is about to develop fundamental catalyst characterization tools. An appropriate method is here the rotating disk electrode (RDE), which is a well-known and effective technique to analyse and compare the activity and durability of electrocatalysts in lab scale without the influence of other components in a fuel cell.

We are therefore looking for an Internship or Master Thesis Student to support us in the development process of our fuel cell catalyst evaluation capabilities.

Topics:

- The main topic is to improve the coating of RDE electrodes by optimizing the receipt and dispersion of Pt/C catalyst inks. The evaluation will be done e.g. by measurements of the electrochemical surface area (ECSA) or activity for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR).
- Later topics might be
- Investigating dispersion parameters for catalyst inks intended for membrane electrode assembly (MEA) coatings.
- Development of accurate and reproducible test methods for fuel cell catalysts.
- Evaluation of catalysts with respect to ECSA, durability and activity for ORR.

To gain further insight into the components and assembly parameters influencing the final MEA, we are looking for a Master Thesis Student to support us in the development process. The following tasks for this project will be performed in the development laboratory in Gothenburg:

Arbetsuppgifterna omfattar: arbete med att koppla behov mot organisationens mål genom att ta fram försörjningsstrategier av både produkter och tjänster, identifiera, utvärdera och utveckla samt upprätthålla goda relationer med leverantörer, göra omvärldsanalyser, förhandla och upprätta avtal, hantera hemtagningsprocesser, arbeta med att utveckla leverantörsbasen. Development Engineer Fuel Cell System

The role

The cross-functional Systems Development team works together with the teams in Systems Integration and Fuel Cell development to develop advanced fuel cell system solutions for stationary, marine and off-road applications. The systems range from just a few kW up to MW power solutions. You will be a part in developing our state-of-the-art fuel cell systems and will be given the opportunity to be a part of a real change in the power generation industry.



Main tasks and responsibilities include:

o Development of high-performing, safe, and compliant fuel cell system products

o Process design of fuel cell systems for different applications ranging from a few kWs to MWs.

o Participation in control strategy development

o Collaborate with customers, external partners and component suppliers.

o Specification and testing of system components



Who we think you are:

Preferred background, expertise and personal qualities:

PowerCell is looking for a Development Engineer with expertise in Electrical System Development.

We now need to strengthen our Systems Integrations team with an Electrical Systems Development Engineer.

We are looking for someone with a wide theoretical and practical knowledge of high-voltage electric vehicle systems and/or other DC power systems (typically voltage range 60-1000 V DC).

Responsibilities

o Development of safe and compliant fuel cell system products, with specific responsibility on the electrical subsystem: specification, design and testing

o Electrical integration of fuel cell systems in different applications: different types of vehicles, stationary power, marine. Collaborate with customers, external partners and component suppliers

o Specification and testing of power electronics and other components associated with electrical integration

o Commissioning and field-testing

o Technical sales support and concept development

Preferred background

o MSc in power electronics or electrical power systems

o Extensive experience from at least one of the following fields: high-voltage systems in electrical vehicles (automotive or heavy-duty), integration of DC power sources or ESS in power industry or marine (for example batteries or fuel cells, solar cells)

o Beneficial experience: Fuel cell systems, battery systems, DC/DC and DC/AC converters



Expertise

o System-level knowledge of high-voltage electric vehicle systems and/or grid-connected power systems

o Theoretical and practical knowledge of power electronics

o Related standards and regulation

o Hands-on troubleshooting and problem solving

o 2D-CAD design software used for electrical design



o Ability to collaborate with international partners, component suppliers and customers

o Ability to work in cross-functional teams

o Fluency in English, both oral and written



Beneficial
