QUALIFICATIONS
We are looking for someone with at least 10 years’ of solid experience of patent consultancy or having industrial experience. You are an EPA or hold a PhD within the Chemistry / LifeTech-area. We are seeking an experienced and engaged IP Strategy & IA Manager to join our global IP (Intellectual Property) department during this exciting time of change. In this role, you will collaborate closely with colleagues across our international IP team and various Business Lines.
In today's competitive landscape, a robust IP strategy and effective management of intellectual assets are crucial for maintaining and enhancing a company's market position. Through the protection and strategic use of our intellectual property, we can stimulate innovation, enhance our competitive position, and deliver meaningful value to our company.


We are strengthening the role IP will have on the business and you will play an important role in establishing the foundation for IP strategy and a structured management of the intellectual assets within the Automotive business. You will be instrumental in crafting the direction, thereby contributing significantly to our strategic goals. In this role, you will work with a global scope and across functions to raise awareness of the importance and value of knowledge and technology. Your efforts will help boost SKF’s technology based competitiveness.


Key Responsibilities
Intellectual Assets: Lead initiatives to capture and manage intellectual and technology assets, ensuring our innovations are protected.
Technology Control: Develop and enhance control positions for products and technology to safeguard advancements.
IP Strategy: Formulate IP strategies that support business needs together with Business Line managers in alignment with corporate vision and goals.
IP Value: Develop indicators of IA and IP financial value and prototype value metrics to make informed decisions.
Process & Governance: Create frameworks and policies for effective IA management and provide continuous process improvement.
Competitive Intelligence: Monitor industry trends to identify opportunities and support strategic business and R&D decisions.
Stakeholder management: Work closely with cross-functional teams — including R&D, Legal, Business Lines, and Corporate Strategy — to unlock business value from intellectual assets.



We expect you to have
Background: A technical background with a proficient business orientation.
Education: A university degree in engineering or equivalent, such as Mechanics, Physics, Electronics, or similar.
Experience: Several years of working in IP strategy, portfolio management, or intellectual asset management, preferably in a global or multinational company.
Skills: Education and experience in Intellectual Asset Management or Intellectual Property Strategy.
Languages: Fluent in English. Knowledge of Swedish, French, or German would be beneficial.

The Patents team comprises 20 colleagues which work in different technology areas. You will also be part of a cross functional stream team focusing on a specific technology area. Role description
Patent Attorneys are experts in matters relating to patents and are responsible for protecting inventions and obtaining patent protection and challenging third party patent rights to leverage Volvo Group’s leading technology position. Patent Attorneys are also responsible for giving proactive advice to R&D projects, inventors and other stakeholders relating to proprietary and third-party patent rights. You will also have responsibility to support and contribute to further development of IP services and processes. 
 Some of your responsibilities will be to: 
•    Primary point of contact for inventors from idea to invention to patent creation and through patent lifetime.
•    Proactively guide and work in close relation with engineers/development projects for IP creation and to further the IP plan, such as by conducting patent harvesting sessions, IP innovation workshops, or driving activities with engineering to support IP Business domain to enact and follow through on the Group IP plan.
•    Provide assessments and advice to engineers, development activities, and managers, including senior management, relating to creation of own IP rights, as well as risks regarding third-party patent rights.
•    Manage patent portfolio (including evaluating invention disclosures and prosecuting patent applications) for at least one business sub-domain to protect inventions of interest to the Volvo Group.
•    Provide IP training.

We are responsible for managing IP for the entire Volvo Group. As such we help to drive the technology transformation with creation and use of IP to support profitability, competitiveness and growth across products, supply chain and R&D.


We develop the Group IP Plan and IP principles, considering the business priorities of the entire Group, thereby providing guidance to internal stakeholders on how to realize business value from IP.


About the role


You are a member of one or more cross-functional Portfolio Teams that include IP Intelligence, Patent Attorneys and IP Legal, Trademark and Design experts.


Each Portfolio focuses on the IP of a particular area of Volvo Group’s technology and business, such as Electromobility, Automation, Connectivity and Digitalization, or Construction Equipment.


As the IP Strategy & Portfolio Partner, you are an operational support in relation to creation of an annual Group IP Plan and the development, management, and use of the IP portfolio.


You support the creation of the Group IP Plan, for example by:
Creating elements of the Group IP Plan, including the translation of business strategies and plans into IP priorities.
Data gathering, analysis and creation of charts.

You support the execution of the Group IP Plan, for example by:
Engaging very closely with the technology organization and relevant forums to drive proactive collaboration activities for IP creation, awareness, and strategy.
Scoping, designing, and facilitating IP innovation workshops.
Analyzing the existing IP portfolio, understanding its relevance and strength in relation to Volvo Group business and future strategy, thus making recommendations on what IP assets to retain, grow or abandon.
Generating reports, for example to present to internal stakeholders, or to update Key Performance Indicators.
Creating IP Strategies to build wanted IP positions in collaborative strategic projects with partners, suppliers, and start-ups.

You support continuous improvement, for example by:
Creating and delivering IP training.
Improving processes, methods, and tools for executing on IP strategies.
Improving gender diversity within the inventor community.

M.Sc. in Engineering or in Intellectual Property management.
Good knowledge in patent, trademark, design, and trade secret law and up-to-date knowledge of IP strategies, trends, developments and practices.
Strong analytical skills including the ability to manage and compile complex and diverse data, and to extract business-relevant insights.
Strong skillset in both written and verbal communication to a wide range of stakeholders and management levels.
Preferably have working knowledge of business strategy, business models, technology, market and IP landscape.
Fluent in English.

You will bring

What will you do?

We are looking for an experienced Senior Patent Attorney to join our IPR team! Intellectual property is an important aspect of the Fingerprints' business plan and patent applications are continuously filed for a wide variety of strategically important technologies within the field of biometrics. You will be working in close collaboration with very competent R&D teams, product managers and other parts of the organization to identify and develop inventions into Intellectual Property.

You will be close to our products and to the company strategy, and become an important player in a small team. The working environment is truly international, with our teams being distributed over the world and the products being sold to a wide variety of customers world-wide.

The reporting for this position is to the company Head of IPR.

Your key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Identifying innovation and patent opportunities based on good understanding of technical solutions, competitive situation, and company strategy
• Drafting new patent applications and taking them through the prosecution phase
• Performing Patentability and Freedom to Operate (FTO) searches
• Performing FTO analysis, including strategic analysis of how to maximize own possibilities and manage risks effectively
• Encourage and facilitate idea generation within the engineering teams
• Provide advice on handling of patent disputes and litigation
• Participating in the formulation of patent strategies to match the company and product strategies

Your professional and academic background

• Technical understanding of microelectronics, and preferably also optics or algorithms, and an academic background, with a Master in relevant technology areas, such as Microelectronics, Optics, Computer Science, Physics, or equivalent.
• Extensive experience in patent drafting and prosecution
• Proven experience in working closely with engineers to distill patentable features in new technical solutions
• Qualified as European Patent Attorney
• Extensive knowledge about patent law and how to practice in the major jurisdictions
• You speak, read, and write English fluently

Role description
Patent Attorney are Volvos foremost expert for matters relating to patents. Patent Attorneys are responsible for protecting inventions and obtaining patent protection, and challenging third party patent rights to leverage Volvo Group’s leading technology position. Patent Attorneys are also responsible for giving proactive advice to R&D projects, inventors and other stakeholders relating to proprietary and third party patent rights. You will also have responsibility to support and contribute in further development of IP services and processes.


The Swedish team including you, as well as the manager responsible for the global teams, report directly to the Group Director Patents. The position offers a global working environment with dedicated and professional colleagues.


You will also be responsible for:
• Handle IP generation / invention harvesting workshops and provide advice and guidelines on inventions, invention disclosures, patent protection strategies and proprietary as well as third party patent rights
• Support the Volvo Group patent creation process by drafting and prosecuting patent applications and defending Volvo Group patents challenged by third parties before a patent office
• Prepare and render patent-related opinion such as patentability, freedom to operate, including validity and infringement, opinions
• Provide advice on patent-related matters, such as patent opposition, appeal, freedom to operate, including validity and infringement, as well as classification and use of proprietary patent rights and portfolios
• Manage external IP firms in connection with patent related-services, including requirements, compliance with service items and quality of services and work products
• Provide input on the Volvo Group IP Plan
• Keep abreast of the development of patent law and practice of major jurisdictions
• Provide support, as applicable, to IP Legal, Trademarks & Designs and others, in contentious and/or enforcement patent matters, IP-related agreements and M&A matters

Som patentkonsult hos AWA Sweden AB kommer du att få arbeta brett inom patentområdet med huvudsaklig utgångspunkt från vårt kontor i Göteborg. Du kommer att få möjligheten att fördjupa dig inom ditt teknikområde och de tillhörande både juridiska och affärsmässiga frågeställningarna, både genom självständigt arbete och tillsammans med kollegor regionalt, nationellt och internationellt.

I rollen ingår att arbeta brett gentemot våra kunder med immaterialrättslig rådgivning, även om tyngdpunkten för dig som patentkonsult normalt ligger inom patentområdet. Våra kunder finns primärt inom näringslivet i Sverige, men vi har också många internationella kunder.

Volvo Group Intellectual Property – who are we?
We are responsible for managing IP for the entire Volvo Group which includes Group Trucks Technology, Buses, Penta and Construction Equipment. As such we drive the cost-effective creation and use of IP to support profitability, competitiveness and growth across products, supply chain and R&D.
We develop and govern the Group IP Plan and IP principles, considering the business priorities of the entire Group, thereby providing guidance to all internal stakeholders on how to realize business value from IP.
We are a diverse group with a great mix of gender, age, nationality and experiences. Whilst the core of the team is located in Gothenburg we work globally with team members situated at different sites around the globe.


About the role
You are a member of a cross-functional Portfolio Team that includes IP Intelligence, Patent Attorneys and IP Legal, Trademark and Design experts. The Portfolio Team is led by a Global Head IP Strategy & Portfolio.
Each portfolio provides focus and has accountability for the IP of a particular area of Volvo Group’s technology and business, such as Engine, Alternative Fuels, Driveline, Automation, Connected Solutions, Electromobility, Cab, Chassis, Penta, Bus and Construction Equipment.
As the IP Portfolio Partner within the team you are an operational support in relation to creation of an annual Group IP Plan and the development of the IP portfolio, its management and use, thereby driving a global transformation towards increasingly business-driven IP management within the Volvo Group.

Creating elements of the Group IP Plan, including the translation of business strategies and plans into IP priorities
Data gathering, analysis and creation of charts

You support the execution of the IP Plan, for example by:
Engaging very closely with the technology organization and relevant forums to drive proactive collaboration activities for IP creation, awareness and strategy
Analyzing and managing the existing IP portfolio, understanding its relevance and strength in relation to Volvo Group business and future strategy
Managing the patent portfolio database including generating reports, for example to present to internal stakeholders, or to update Key Performance Indicators

You support continuous improvement, for example by:
Improving processes, methods and tools for executing on IP strategies
Creating and delivering IP training
Developing and delivering IP innovation workshops

The position promises a unique mix of challenges, pushing you to create and maintain relations with colleagues across continents, functions and Group companies.
You report to the Group Director IP Strategy & Portfolio.

Qualifications
M.Sc. in engineering or in Intellectual Capital Management
Good knowledge in patent, trademark, design, and trade secret law and up-to-date knowledge of IP strategies, trends, developments and practices
Strong analytical skills including the ability to manage and compile large amounts of complex and diverse data, and to understand and extract the business implications of the data
Strong skillset in both written and verbal communication to a wide range of stakeholders and management levels
Preferably have working knowledge of business strategy, business models, technology, market and IP landscape
Fluent in English

The Patents team is global with locations in France, Japan, Korea, Sweden and the US. We are now looking for a Patent Attorney to join our highly skilled team in Gothenburg, Sweden.

The Patents team in Sweden currently comprises six colleagues which work in different technology areas. You will also be part of a cross functional portfolio team focusing on a specific technology area. The diversity in the portfolio team allows to efficiently use the strength of each team member. You will function as a patent expert in the portfolio team.

You will be located at Volvo Group Headquarters in Gothenburg together with about 30 colleagues in Volvo Group IP.

Role description


Patent Attorneys are our experts in matters relating to patents. Patent Attorneys are responsible for protecting inventions and obtaining patent protection, and challenging third party patent rights to leverage Volvo Group’s leading technology position. Patent Attorneys are also responsible for giving proactive advice to R&D projects, inventors and other stakeholders relating to proprietary and third party patent rights. You will also have responsibility to support and contribute in further development of IP services and processes.


The Swedish team including you, as well as the manager responsible for the global teams, report directly to the Group Director Patents. The position offers a global working environment with dedicated and professional colleagues.

You will also be responsible for:
Handle IP generation / invention harvesting workshops and provide advice and guidelines on inventions, invention disclosures, patent protection strategies and proprietary as well as third party patent rights
Support the Volvo Group patent creation process by drafting and prosecuting patent applications and defending Volvo Group patents challenged by third parties before a patent office
Prepare and render patent-related opinion such as patentability, freedom to operate, including validity and infringement, opinions
Provide advice on patent-related matters, such as patent opposition, appeal, freedom to operate, including validity and infringement, as well as classification and use of proprietary patent rights and portfolios
Manage external IP firms in connection with patent related-services, including requirements, compliance with service items and quality of services and work products
Provide input on the Volvo Group IP Plan
Keep abreast of the development of patent law and practice of major jurisdictions
Provide support, as applicable, to IP Legal, Trademarks & Designs and others, in contentious and/or enforcement patent matters, IP-related agreements and M&A matters



Who are you?

Education and Experience
Technical degree, i.e. Master of Science or equivalent
A minimum of 3 years of experience working as a Patent Attorney, experience as a consultant and in-house are both valuable to us
Preferably you are qualified as a European Patent Attorney, or you are part qualified with the ambition to qualify. Preferably, you have at least a few years of post-qualification experience or relevant similar experience
Expert knowledge of patent law and practice of major jurisdictions, including obtaining and defending proprietary patent rights and challenging third party patent rights
Expert knowledge of rendering patent-related opinions, e.g. patentability, opposition, freedom to operate, validity and infringement opinion



Good English communication skills, both oral and written are essential.

Support the Volvo Group patent creation process by drafting and prosecuting patent applications and defending Volvo Group patents challenged by third parties before a patent office
Prepare and render patent-related opinion such as patentability, freedom to operate, including validity and infringement, opinions
Provide advice on patent-related matters, such as patent opposition, appeal, freedom to operate, including validity and infringement, as well as classification and use of proprietary patent rights and portfolios
Manage external IP firms in connection with patent related-services, including requirements, compliance with service items and quality of services and work products
Provide input on the Volvo Group IP Plan
Keep abreast of the development of patent law and practice of major jurisdictions
Provide support, as applicable, to IP Legal, Trademarks & Designs and others, in contentious and/or enforcement patent matters, IP-related agreements and M&A matters

Education and Experience
Technical degree, i.e. Master of Science or equivalent
A minimum of 5 years of experience working as a Patent Attorney, experience as a consultant and in-house are both valuable to us
Preferably you are qualified as a European Patent Attorney, or you are part qualified with the ambition to qualify. Preferably, you have at least a few years of post-qualification experience or relevant similar experience
Expert knowledge of patent law and practice of major jurisdictions, including obtaining and defending proprietary patent rights and challenging third party patent rights
Expert knowledge of rendering patent-related opinions, e.g. patentability, opposition, freedom to operate, validity and infringement opinion

Good English communication skills, both oral and written are essential.

What you will do
As part of the corporate legal team at one of the most respected and recognizable car brands in the world, you will have the opportunity to drive change, work with continuous improvement and take on all types of challenges, big and small, in a truly dynamic environment. In this role you will, together with the other IP team members, provide support within the patent, trademark and design law areas, involving independently handling and assuming full responsibility for:
* Collecting and maintaining all relevant IP department data and periodically reporting associated statistics to support the management of the IP Department;
* Updating database management system records, and uploading emails and documents received from all outside vendors handling global patent, design and trademark applications and other IP matters (i.e., “IP docketing”);
* Conducting patentability investigations, technology landscape analysis, freedom-to-operate analysis, and various other database searches to support our innovation area;
* Reviewing and making recommendations on externally submitted ideas;
* Classifying invention-related documents by various internal technical taxonomies;
* Conducting due diligence on technology start-ups in support of the Volvo Cars Tech Fund – our venture capital subsidiary; and preparing reports that translate IP data to actions that deliver business value and tangible benefits.

This includes a close interaction and constant correspondence with the IP team in Göteborg, as well as collaboration with members of the global IP team, R&D, Design, the Partnership & Alliances Office, other parts of the organization and related entities, and outside vendors.

You and you skills
You have engineering or technical degree (B.S., M.S. or PhD. in Automotive, Physics, Mechanical, Electrical, or Software Eng.);
You have 2+ years of experience in engineering with an understanding of high-tech (including software and data) and preferably IP (patent, design and/or trademark) knowledge.
You also must be excellent at working and writing in English.
You have Computer-savvy skills with proven database management system skills as well as proven analytical skills, collecting data, making decisions and developing solutions or judgments within a technical environment.
On a personal level
You pay exceptional attention to detail and are structured and service minded and have focus on getting things done.
It is very important that you are also by administrative work.
You enjoy identifying improvement areas and embrace change and you meet deadlines and are fine to work under time pressure from time to time.

Job description:
As a patent professional within the Patent Unit Gothenburg your main responsibilities will include the following:
• Identification and protection of patentable inventions. This will involve working in close cooperation with both inventors and other research & development staff.
• Handling and deciding on patent applications and patents including: drafting, filing and prosecution of patent applications in multiple countries.
• Assessment of the nature and desired extent of patent protection in view of Ericsson’s business.
• Reviewing Ericsson technologies and services under all patent aspects.
• Providing advice on validity, relevance and scope of both Ericsson and third-party patents.
• Managing patent portfolios and making sure that quality is secured for our standard essential patents (SEPs) and implementation patents.
• Investigating and supporting in technical discussions for licensing and sales opportunities for Ericsson’s patents.
• Preparing claim charts.
• Continuously improve the ways of working with the above responsibilities.
 
Minimum Qualifications
• Master of Science or Ph.D. in a relevant technical field such as electronic engineering, applied physics, computer science, or ICT.
• Very good written and spoken English.
• A number of years’ experience of patent work.
* Works well in teams as well as individually.
 
Preferred Qualifications
• Preferably Patent Attorney for any of the jurisdictions US, EP or CN, but applicants who have started with the certification would be considered.
• Self-motivated and strong drive to accomplish tasks and become a world-class patent professional.
• Good analytical and communication skills.
• Good knowledge of 3G, 4G and/or 5G standardization and/or mobile phone/system implementation. Knowledge of packet core networks, in particular SAE/EPC and 5GCN, is an advantage.
